Hot Topic #118:

It's flu season! The flu shot was created in the 1930s to protect American troops during World War II. Every year, it is updated to match the most common strain of the flu virus.

For most of us, getting the flu would mean a few days in bed, but for vulnerable groups like elderly people, babies, and pregnant women, the flu can be severe and even deadly. Getting the annual flu shot protects people in our community who are at risk, and means that if you do get the flu, you won't feel as sick.
How are you keeping yourself and your loved ones safe this flu season?
Vaccines have saved more lives than any other medical invention in history!

Some people are scared to get vaccinated but know that if they don't, they could get sick or put family members at risk.
How would you respond to a friend who is nervous about getting the flu shot?
  • Offer to go with her
  • Share information on the safety of vaccines
  • Remind her that vaccines keep our whole community safe
  • Help her make an appointment at the pharmacy
  • Let her know that most types of insurance cover the cost
