Hot Topic #120:

Thanks to our phones, we have the world at the tip of our fingers...but that can come at a cost. Sometimes, the avalanche of information we see in the news, social media, and from group chats with loved ones can be overwhelming and...spooky.
How often do you come across content on your phone that feels scary or unsettling?
Social media is full of people looking for clicks and views. Sometimes, people use old, outdated news or AI to make viewers angry or afraid, and click on the content.
How can you tell if something scary that you see online is the truth or a trick?
  • By how it looks/sounds
  • If it's trying to get me to click, it's fake
  • I check the comments
  • I Google the topic to see if it is true
There are a lot of videos and pictures online right now that make viewers afraid of immigrants. Some of the stories are made up or exaggerated to make viewers angry.

When you see stuff like that on your feed, what do you do?
  • I read the comments to see what people think
  • I Google it to see if it's true
  • I unfollow or mute the account
  • I ignore it

Thank you for sharing!

What would you do if someone you know posted something hateful, scary, and untrue on Facebook?
